Rhythm game terms, explained
A plain-English glossary of rhythm-game vocabulary: BPM, charts, beatmaps, offset, judge windows, accuracy, mods, and more, with quick examples from osu!, Beat Saber, and mobile titles.

Rhythm-game players and writers lean on a small, repeated vocabulary. Learn it once and the rest of the genre becomes far easier to follow: patch notes, scoreboard breakdowns, the official docs, and the in-game settings all start using the same words. This glossary covers the terms that show up everywhere, with quick examples so you can match them to what you actually see on screen.
Tempo and structure
BPM (beats per minute)
The tempo of a song, counted in beats per minute. A 120 BPM track has two beats every second, a 180 BPM track has three. Faster BPM usually means denser charts at the same difficulty, since there are more beats to land per second. You can feel BPM directly in your foot tapping: that tempo is the beat the chart is built on.
Time signature
How beats are grouped. Most pop and electronic music is in 4/4, meaning beats come in groups of four, which is why charts so often place big accents on every fourth note. Waltz-style music in 3/4 and odd signatures like 7/8 or 5/4 show up in rhythm games too, especially in boss-style or finale charts, and they break your normal grouping instincts until you adjust.
Measure (or bar)
A block of beats defined by the time signature. In 4/4 a measure holds four beats. Charts often place section breaks, fills, or pattern resets at measure boundaries, and learning to feel them helps you read ahead.
Notes and charts
Chart
The arrangement of notes for a single song at a single difficulty. A chart is what you actually play. The same song can have several charts, one per difficulty, and each is a separate piece of work by a charter.
Map (also beatmap, particularly in osu!)
A package that bundles the chart, the song, the background, and any metadata. In osu! and similar community-driven games, you download a map rather than a chart per se, and one map can hold multiple difficulties.
Note types
A small family of note types covers most of the genre. Single notes are taps. Hold notes (sometimes called long notes or LN) press and release on cue. Slides, sliders, glides, or rubs ask you to follow a path. Flicks and rolls add direction. The exact name varies by game, but the shape on screen maps to one of those actions.
Highway
The lane notes travel down toward you. Some games call it a track or play field. Reading a beat or so ahead of the highway is the core timing habit that carries across every title.
Judge line (or hit line)
The fixed line notes cross when you should press. Where to keep your eyes: slightly above the line, not on it.
Timing and scoring
Judge (or judgment window)
The timing windows a game uses to grade a hit. A “Perfect” or “Marvelous” window is the tightest, often tens of milliseconds wide. “Great” or “Good” is wider. “Bad” or “Near” is wider still. “Miss” is outside everything. Tighter judge windows mean a tougher game at the same density, which is why two charts with the same BPM can feel very different.
Accuracy
The average quality of all your hits across a song, usually shown as a percentage. Accuracy is the truer skill metric than combo, because it survives a single miss instead of resetting to zero.
Combo
Consecutive successful hits without a miss. Combo drives scoring in many games and feels great to climb, but a single miss resets it. A long combo tells you nothing about timing quality on its own.
Offset
A calibration value that shifts note timing to match your setup, measured in milliseconds. A negative offset shifts earlier, a positive offset shifts later. Every audio chain adds some delay, and offset is how you cancel it. Most games separate audio offset from visual offset, since they go wrong for different reasons.
Approach circle
The shrinking ring on a hit circle used in osu! standard. You tap when the outer ring lines up with the circle’s edge. Approach circles are the visual cue that teaches new players to read instead of guess.
AR and OD (osu! specific)
In osu!, AR (Approach Rate) sets how quickly approach circles shrink, which controls how much reading time you get before a note arrives. OD (Overall Difficulty) tightens the judge window and raises the spin-or-slider output. Higher AR means less reaction time; higher OD means less leniency.
Inputs and hardware
Tap keys
The keys you press to hit notes in keyboard-driven modes. In osu! standard, players usually bind two keys (commonly Z and X) so they can alternate fingers on fast bursts. In mania-style games, tap keys span the columns.
Tablet (graphics tablet)
A pen-and-pad input used by many osu! players for aiming. A tablet maps a fixed area of the screen to a fixed area of the pad, which gives consistent travel and removes the lift-off and drift problems of a mouse. See the controllers and gear guide for more.
Strum bar
The horizontal lever on a plastic guitar controller that registers strums. A quieter, smoother strum bar is the upgrade most guitar-controller players want first.
Pad (dance pad, hard pad, metal pad)
The floor input for dance games like DDR and PIU. Soft foam pads are cheap and roll up, hard pads are rigid and stay flat, and metal pads are the arcade-grade upgrade.
Dongle (2.4 GHz wireless)
A small USB transmitter that pairs a wireless device directly to a receiver instead of using standard Bluetooth. Dongle connections are far faster than Bluetooth and close to wired, which is why low-latency wireless gear leans on them.
Software layer
Mods (gameplay)
Optional modifiers that change how a chart plays. Easy mods slow notes, hide approach circles, or relax judge windows; harder mods shrink them, hide parts of the chart, or speed up the song. Score multipliers usually scale with how much the mod changes the experience.
Mods (game software)
In some games, “mods” also means unofficial software modifications: extra tools, custom-song loaders, or visual themes. These are not made by the developer and can break when the game updates. They sit in a legal gray area when they touch copyrighted music.
Stable and lazer (osu! specific)
The two official osu! clients. Stable is the long-running client most scoreboards run on. Lazer is the rewrite, with new features and a cleaner engine. Both play the same maps, so use whichever runs best on your hardware.
Mapping (also charting)
The act of creating a chart. Mappers, sometimes called charters, place notes to a song, choose patterns, set difficulty, and ship the result as a beatmap. The mapping community is a large part of why osu! and Clone Hero have such deep song libraries.
Sync
How well a chart lines up with the song it is set to. An out-of-sync map feels off no matter how well you play, and fixing sync (either by adjusting the map or by submitting a correction) is the most basic requirement of a publishable chart.
